The Three Generations of ZORB®

Zorb is a family of specialty super absorbent and safe fabrics designed to improve performance in reusable cloth articles. They are thin, hypoallergenic, chemical free and amazingly absorbent. Their ability to soak fluids quickly and hold a lot makes them useful as a cost effective solution to a wide range of products that require holding power and absorbency.

Zorb Original (1st Generation) is a non-woven that has to be sandwiched between two fabrics. It does not shrink or stretch. For larger items it should be quilted onto another fabric with stitching at least every six-12 inches. NO PRE-WASH.

Zorb 2 (2nd Generation) does not need to be sandwiched and has 2 versions - Dimples and Diamond - each has a different construction, as the names suggest, both designed for efficient absorption.

Zorb 2 Dimples has a bamboo/organic cotton knitted face on both sides with a stuffing on super-absorbent Zorb fibers between them.

Zorb 2 Diamond has wicking polyester on one side and bamboo/organic cotton on the other side with a stuffing on super-absorbent Zorb fibers between them.

Zorb 3D (3rd Generation) has four versions - 3 in the Dimple design and 1 in Diamond - they all have durable knitted faces and Zorb fibers stuffed in between. All of them are pre-shrunk to some extent but may shrink a little more.

Zorb 3D Organic Cotton Dimple has 100% organic cotton on both faces

Zorb 3D Bamboo Dimples has 70/30 bamboo/cotton on both faces and

Zorb 3D Stay Dry Dimples has 100% wicking polyester on both faces.

All these are also available as " Pre-Activated" which simply means that one does not have to wash them to make them start absorbing.

Care standard

Zorb Original - can be washed and dried hot, no bleach, no fabric softeners. MUST NOT BE WASHED PRIOR TO STITCHING BETWEEN TWO FABRICS.

Zorb 2 - wash warm, dry cool -  this will keep your articles’ shrink/recovery in spec. No bleach, no fabric softeners.

Zorb 3D - wash warm, dry cool, no bleach, no fabric softeners.

Zorb 2 and 3D - expect extra shrinkage when used in items that are typically dried hot regardless of the care instructions!  Dryer Heat will not affect its lifespan or performance, but you can expect progressive shrinking of up to 10% on Dimple patterns and 20% on Diamond patterns.

Zorb 3D - expect reduced shrinkage compared to Zorb 2. If washed on hot, they will shrink between 5% and 8%.

Design and Assembly Tips

Cutting - All types of Zorb can be cut using conventional methods.  When die cutting, serrated blades work best onZorb, non-serrated on Zorb 2 and Zorb 3D.

Needles - Zorb is flexible, it can use any type of needle. Zorb 2 and Zorb 3D have a knitted face so use ballpoints only.

Sewing - Zorb Ist Gen has to be sandwiched between two fabrics. For large items quilt Zorb original to the face fabric. Zorb 2 and Zorb 3D fabrics can be edged by serging (overlock) or bound using 1” FOE, bias tape, or knit bindings. The surface knits are jersey with small points of interlock at the pattern. As such the edges of the fabric will run under the seam tension of a turn and top-stitch.  If you are turning and top-stitching, stabilize the edge with a Merrow or 3-thread overlock then use a 1/2″ seam allowance to be sure the base and top-stitch work together to relieve pressure on the seam.
